Internationally acclaimed visual artist Jumaadi’s exhibition draws inspiration from early 20th century Indonesian writer Chairil Anwar's epic, folkloric narrative story of voyage, longing and love.
My Love is in an Island Far Away traverses the shared histories and narratives of neighbours Indonesia and Australia, juxtaposing Anwar's poetic folkloric tale with the historical reality of the internment of Javanese political detainees in Australia during the Second World War.
Jumaadi’s exhibition is accompanied by live shadowplay performance Island of Shadow on 22 to 24 January, blending the traditional shadowplay of wyang kulit with experimental approaches in light and sound, to explore the chaotic processes and outcomes connected to global exchange.
