4A CENTRE FOR CONTEMPORARY ASIAN ART | AUSTRALIA

UPDATE: 18 March, 2020 – 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art has closed its office and galleries until further notice to ensure the health and wellbeing of its staff and audience.

A diverse showcase of new works by more than 20 exceptional Pacific artists celebrating both customary and contemporary art practice.

Wansolwara: One Salt Water brings together exhibitions, performances and events from across the Pacific and throughout the Great Ocean, reflecting a connected waterscape that holds distinct and diverse cultures and communities.

Celebrating the depth and diversity of contemporary Pacific and Great Ocean visual and material culture, the exhibition places customary practices alongside contemporary articulations in moving image, design, writing and art.

Please Explain: no one's drowning, baby

Sun 19 Jan from 2.00pm to 3.30pm

Pacific Island nations are in the midst of a climate change crisis. This edition of 4A Centre for Contemporary Asian Art’s Please Explain talk series (which has been running since 2016) takes Marshall Islander poet, performance artist, educator Kathy Jetñil-Kijiner’s address and poem Dear Matafele Peinem, presented as the 2014 Opening Ceremony of the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Summit as a starting point for discussion on the role artists and activists play in this major challenge facing our Pacific region.

What stories are being told across our ocean, and what are we to lose if the crisis is not met with appropriate action? What is the role of art and policy here – what can we do?

The panel is moderated by Sydney Festival Director Wesley Enoch and featuring artists of Wansolwara: One Salt Water.

Tickets are free, but registration is required through 4a Centre for Contemporary Asian Art
