Yarning Circles are traditionally spaces to share language and stories. During Sydney Festival, the Library hosts bespoke storytelling events in Aboriginal language for adults and families.
Yarning Circles are led by the Library’s Indigenous Engagement Branch, as well as Elders and language custodians working with the Library's exhibition reference group. The yarning circle is at the heart of the Living Language exhibition, and is a safe space to learn about language and the effect it has on creating place and culture.
The importance of sharing and hearing language is key to understanding the strength and diversity of Aboriginal languages. The Library hosts Yarning Circles as opportunities both for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to celebrate and share their languages, and for non-Indigenous people to experience the diversity and richness of our many NSW languages.
Yarning Circles present language classes and stories for families and children, as well as bespoke language storytime sessions for adults.
