Visual Concept & Scenography: United Visual Artists
Music: Fly Pan Am
In an era of rising nationalism and mass surveillance, the human body is subject to increasingly invasive forms of oversight and processing.
As walls go up and borders harden, as public and private space is consumed by technology that monitors and tests our actions and legitimacy, Canadian avant-garde choreographer Dana Gingras and her dancers ask: what space remains for the unruly, ungovernable body?
A synchronised, intricate and staccato field of light and projections, created by United Visual Artists (UVA), is scored with live music by Canadian post-rockers Fly Pan Am and field recordings by Dave Bryant (of Godspeed You! Black Emperor). In this liminal, minimal space, the 10 dancers of Frontera navigate ideas of inclusion and exclusion; their bodies mapped in high resolution, their destinies unresolved.
Frontera is the latest in a series of socially engaged, cutting edge, large-scale works created by Gingras and her company Animals of Distinction; work shaped by shifts in technological possibility and inspired by the belief that the body,"can be employed to explore a vision of the world that is larger than our individual, isolated experiences".
